GEEK PICK: Anki Overdrive Fast and Furious Edition

Stay on target

Toys cars are about as classic a piece of Americana as you can get. Give children a playful taste of the open-road freedom awaiting them in adulthood. Even if you don’t like the reality of driving, the allure of driving is nigh irresistible, which is also why we flock to ridiculous racing action movies like, oh, the operatic Fast & Furious franchise. So naturally toy cars based on Dom’s framgibliava are a thing. However, Anki Overdrive Fast and Furious Edition ($169) isn’t a lazy use of the #brand. It’s a really nifty combination of modern toy tech and classic car thrills.

Anki as you’ll remember is the same company behind affordable yet impressively intelligent home robots like Cozmo and the upcoming Vector. And whether they feature Vin Diesel or not these Overdrive race car toys feature a similar level of surprising cleverness. It’s basically mobile-powered slot car racing.

Players create their own track by easily snapping together different pieces. The included track sections let you make a variety of loops and straightaways, but you can purchase more pieces for more expansive and creative designs. The only requirement is a starting piece. For extra safety and flair you can also add guard rails and risers to lift up the track.

After charging the cars and connecting over Bluetooth, you can then use your phone app to drive them around. Whatever magic the track magnets or AI path-finding is using to keep cars in place, lining them up at the starting line and aligning them behind each other, is really cool to watch to motion. Even if they get knocked completely off the track the cars quickly get back in formation. While racing you can accelerate, brake, and shift lanes, trying to stay on the inside track. And after races use the tire cleaner tool to keep up vehicle performance.

Along with races against F&F legends like Hobbs, Letty, and Tej, the app also challenges you to Mario Kart-esque battle matches. As the Wii U version of Mario Kart 8 proved, trying to blast opponents while racing around a loop isn’t ideal. And aside from some vibration and changing light colors, it’s tough to tell when you’ve actually made a hit. But the battle mode does add some appreciated variety to the racing.

We’ve still got at least a few more good years of Fast and Furious movies to look forward to, especially if they really start piling on the spin-offs. So it’s a good thing that toys based on the series like Anki Overdrive Fast and Furious Edition are actually pretty good!
